Maalu Maalu was the original boutique hotel to open up on Passikudah’s pristine coastline and it is still one of the best on Sri Lanka’s newly developed east coast. The unique wooden and thatched villas surround the pool and face towards the sea; traditional Sri Lankan fishing villages inspire these so they feel natural and in keeping. Downstairs are the comfortable, bright and airy Deluxe Rooms, with the Deluxe Attic Rooms upstairs. The Deluxe Attic rooms are perfect for families as they have two twin beds on a mezzanine level above the king size bed. The suites come in blocks of 4 and are closer to the sea. These are bigger with better views and each cluster comes with its own pool and steam room.
The main restaurant serves food throughout the day, with White Sands serving a selection of a-la-carte meals at lunchtime on the beach. There’s also a quirky beach side bar made out of a traditional boat, ideal for evening cocktails. For those wanting to make the most of the ocean, LSR Water Sports is located just around the corner. They can arrange anything from snorkelling to scuba diving and from jet skies to banana boats. There’s a definite laid back and unpretentious feel here and the hotel places huge importance on the environment. We feel it’s a great option on a beautiful stretch of beach.
