Boulder Garden is one of only a few properties offering decent accommodation close to Sinharaja forest. It is something of a surprising find, being both an eco-retreat and a boldly designed architectural achievement; the property is built into, under, around and over a series of massive stone steps, meaning that it is not ideal for those with limited mobility but is completely unique in the country. The 10 rooms are fairly generous in size, though a little gloomy, and some have excellent views across the forest. There is a tropical pool next to the restaurant area, which sits in the overhang below a huge boulder. Wildlife is part of the immediate scenery here, so don’t be surprised to see monkeys and plenty of birdlife around. It is not particularly luxurious, but staff are friendly and it is a decent option if you want to visit the forest.
